An open letter to the U.S. Congress

Social Security solvency is possible and necessary.

1 so far! Help us get to 5 signers!

Plugging the Social Security gap is possible and necessary in order to continue benefits. We can get it done like this: Remove the limit on wages subject to FICA taxes. This would increase the solvency of SSA programs and close 63% of the gap between revenue and outlay. Potentially slightly increase the tax rate (an increase of 1.55% would close the rest of the gap). Indexing benefits COLAs to CPI-E and creating a minimum benefit at 125% of the poverty level would have humanitarian benefits, and could stimulate spending and potentially reduce need for programs like SNAP and SSI. These increases could be offset by increasing applicability for FICA taxes (I don't recognize the categories in the slider). This panel of choices would close the gap and have a little left over, according to the CBO widget (111% of the gap closed). All the best.
