I am writing to urge you to speak out publicly and act decisively against the reported plan for President Donald Trump to accept a $400 million luxury jet from the government of Qatar. This proposed gift is unseemly, dangerous, and deeply undermines both our national security and the integrity of our democratic institutions.
A Deeply Inappropriate Gift with Troubling Optics
No sitting U.S. president should accept such an extravagant gift from a foreign government. The fact that this aircraft could become President Trump’s personal property at some point is especially alarming. This move sends the worst possible message to the American public and to the world: that U.S. leadership can be influenced—or even purchased—by foreign powers.
A Potential Trojan Horse
Beyond the optics, the national security implications are staggering. A $400 million aircraft built and outfitted by a foreign government—especially one with its own strategic interests in the region—presents a clear risk of embedded surveillance tools, cybersecurity threats, and concealed monitoring systems. A Clear Violation of the Emoluments Clause
Accepting such a gift from a foreign government while serving as president is a direct violation of the U.S. Constitution’s Emoluments Clause. The founders included this provision precisely to prevent foreign influence and corruption at the highest levels of government. There is no ambiguity here—this gift is unconstitutional.
