The bad GOP authoritarian experiment that has been Texas for almost 40 years died overnight. Texas has been too long an innovator for all forms of right-wing state repression. Using voting restrictions and gerrymandering to entrench GOP power. Or trying to. Ha. Pioneering restrictions on speech by passing book bans, censoring higher education, and demanding the firing of public servants whose views offended GOP sensibilities. McCarthyism Texas style. Pioneering and passing draconian anti-abortion measures. Passing their own strict ban with nearly unusable exceptions. While their constituents died. Passing a bounty law encouraging Texans to snitch on their neighbors, while also trying  to bully other states into enforcing its anti-abortion laws. Fugitive Slave Acts anyone? And Texas lawmakers have engaged in the outright persecution of trans people and their families. Openly. Proudly. Loudly. Including triggering investigations by Child Protective Services into parents if their child was suspected of transitioning. Heinous witch hunt. Against children. So we the people spoke. Screamed rather. In his victory speech Tuesday night, James Talarico explained it clearly…”We are tired of being told to hate each other.” Texas is free at last. Peddle your vitriol elsewhere.
