Enact a Self-Checkout Discount Law in Our State

Please introduce and pass a law requiring retailers to give customers a discount when they use self-checkout. When I scan, bag, and process my own purchases, I'm doing work that used to be paid labor. Retailers pocket those savings. That's not right. Self-checkout was sold as a convenience, but it's really a cost transfer from the store's payroll to my time. A discount requirement is the most direct way to put money back in shoppers' pockets. New York's Assemblywoman Nikki Lucas introduced exactly this kind of bill, A.11501, which would mandate a 10% discount for self-checkout customers. Lawmakers in Rhode Island, Connecticut, Ohio, and New York City are all moving to regulate self-checkout. Our state should be next. Introduce a bill this session that requires retailers to share the savings with the customers doing the work.
