I am a constituent in your district and am writing to express my firm opposition to H.R. 22, the Safeguard American Voter Eligibility (SAVE) Act. I strongly urge you to vote NO on this legislation.
While I support election integrity, this bill creates unnecessary and discriminatory barriers for millions of eligible American citizens. Federal law already prohibits non-citizens from voting; H.R. 22 serves only to complicate the registration process for valid voters. I am specifically concerned by:
Disenfranchisement: Requiring documentary proof of citizenship—which millions of Americans, particularly the elderly, students, and low-income individuals, do not have readily available—will block eligible voters from the polls.
The "In-Person" Requirement: The bill’s language requiring documents to be presented in person would effectively end online and mail-in registration, as well as non-partisan voter registration drives.
Impact on Women: Roughly 90% of married women have changed their names, meaning their current legal IDs do not match their birth certificates. This bill creates a "paperwork poll tax" that targets women disproportionately.
Unfunded Mandates: This bill places an immense administrative and financial burden on local election offices without providing the funding to implement these changes.
As your constituent, I expect you to protect the fundamental right to vote, not create hurdles that make it harder for citizens to participate. I am tracking this bill closely and will be looking for your name among the "No" votes.
