Today I take pen in hand to write and demand an immediate investigation into the DOJ settlement that permanently bars the IRS from examining Donald Trump, his sons, the Trump Organization, and their affiliates for existing tax liabilities.
Former IRS Commissioner Daniel Werfel said he was unaware of any instance where the IRS agreed in advance to permanently forgo examination of previously filed returns for a specific person or business.
That's not a settlement — that's a separate set of tax rules for one family.
The same deal created a $1.776 billion "Anti-Weaponization Fund" to compensate Trump allies, with acting AG Todd Blanche refusing to rule out payouts to January 6th rioters.
Even Senate Majority Leader John Thune called it something he's "not a big fan" of. The judge who dismissed the underlying lawsuit admonished the DOJ for failing to be transparent and questioned whether a legitimate case even existed. This fund has no meaningful oversight and every hallmark of a political slush fund.
No American gets a permanent IRS immunity agreement.
Congress needs to subpoena the full settlement documents, scrutinize the fund's disbursement criteria, and pass legislation preventing the executive branch from unilaterally shielding any individual from tax examination.
