Due to HR 1 (OBBB), healthcare costs are poised to dramatically increase costs for American families, potentially leaving millions uninsured and driving up healthcare expenses across the board.
The expiration of enhanced Affordable Care Act (ACA) premium tax credits at the end of 2025 could lead to a staggering 75% average increase in marketplace premiums in 2026. This, coupled with new regulations that will reduce marketplace enrollment will force many healthy individuals to drop their insurance. The consequences are dire: more people will delay necessary care, ultimately seeking help in emergency rooms - the most expensive care option - when their conditions become critical.
Furthermore, Congress slashed Medicaid and Medicare funding. These cuts will leave millions uninsured resulting in increased uncompensated care costs, putting immense pressure on healthcare providers. We're already seeing hospitals close due to anticipated losses from these Medicaid cuts, a trend that will only worsen if action isn't taken.
The solution is clear: Congress must fully fund Medicare, Medicaid, and the ACA to ensure healthcare remains affordable and accessible. If Congress can’t achieve that , then Congress must eliminate their lifetime healthcare benefit and sign up for the ACA to get a full understanding of what Americans experience.
Additionally, I urge Congress to take back control of the budget. The actions of the executive branch to impound funds legislated by Congress are illegal. The Impoundment Control Act must be enforced. What is the point of passing a budget if this administration can simply ignore it? Congress must also agree to end rescissions. Again, what is the point of negotiating a budget if you aren’t planning on honoring the agreement?
I urge you to prioritize the health and financial security of your constituents. Take a stand against these harmful policies and champion legislation that protects and enhances our healthcare system while simultaneously reinforcing Congress’ authority to set the budget.
