Oppose draconian Medi-Cal asset limit for vulnerable Californians

The proposal to reinstate the $2,000 asset limit for Medi-Cal eligibility for seniors and people with disabilities would force thousands into poverty and jeopardize their access to crucial healthcare services. This draconian policy fails to account for the realities of living costs in California, where even a modest rent can exceed the proposed limit. Medical expenses not covered by insurance would rapidly deplete any limited savings. While aimed at reducing state spending, this short-sighted measure is likely to increase costs in the long run. Without access to affordable home care through Medi-Cal, many seniors and disabled individuals would be forced into more expensive nursing home facilities paid for by the state. This policy undermines efforts to allow our most vulnerable residents to maintain independence and dignity by aging in place. California should maintain the current eligibility criteria without an asset test. This protects access to healthcare for low-income seniors and people with disabilities while avoiding higher long-term costs to taxpayers. Rather than reviving an antiquated policy from 1989 that no longer reflects modern realities, the state should explore fiscally responsible alternatives that do not punish our most vulnerable citizens for modest savings intended to cover basic costs of living.
