Restore CPB Funding to Protect Rural Emergency Alert Systems

13 so far! Help us get to 25 signers!

I am deeply concerned about the recent $1.1 billion funding cut to the Corporation for Public Broadcasting (CPB) and its devastating impact on emergency warning systems in rural America. This rescission bill, passed by Congress, threatens the safety and well-being of millions of Americans who rely on public broadcasting as their primary source of news and critical disaster warnings. As we enter hurricane season along the Atlantic coast and prepare for winter storms in the Northern Plains, many rural communities are now at risk of losing their only reliable source of emergency alerts. Public radio and television stations play a crucial role in disseminating time-sensitive information during natural disasters, from hurricanes to earthquakes. The situation is particularly dire in states like Alaska and California. In Alaska, where vast distances separate communities, public broadcasting is often the sole lifeline for weather updates and emergency information. Similarly, PBS outlets in Northern California, which are instrumental in quickly pushing out earthquake alerts, are now facing potential shutdowns. These cuts disproportionately affect rural areas, leaving them vulnerable and potentially cut off from vital weather and emergency alerts. This is not just about preserving public media; it's about ensuring public safety. I urge you to take immediate action to restore funding to the Corporation for Public Broadcasting. The $1.1 billion cut must be reversed to maintain these essential emergency warning systems. Our rural communities deserve the same level of safety and preparedness as urban areas. Please prioritize this issue in upcoming budget discussions and work towards reinstating full funding for the CPB. The safety of your constituents depends on your swift action.
