I am writing to you today as a concerned constituent to express my strong opposition to any efforts to implement a national ban on abortion. The overturning of Roe v. Wade by the Supreme Court in June 2022 has already had significant and distressing repercussions across the country, leading to a patchwork of state laws that vary drastically in their approach to abortion care.
This divergence has resulted in abortion being banned in at least a dozen states, with others expected to follow. However, it is important to note that there is a stark contrast in other states, where legislatures are actively working to protect and ensure access to abortion care. This division highlights a fundamental discord in our nation's approach to reproductive rights and underscores the need for congressional action to safeguard these rights.
Despite the push by some Congressional Republicans for a national ban on abortion, it is crucial to recognize that such measures are out of step with the views of the majority of Americans. National surveys consistently show broad support for maintaining access to abortion care. Furthermore, the proposed exemptions for cases of rape and incest are often impractical and unhelpful, considering the low reporting rates of such crimes and the complex and lengthy process of proving an assault to access abortion services.
Imposing a national ban on abortion would not only contravene the will of the American people but would also exacerbate inequalities and endanger the health and well-being of countless women and pregnant individuals, particularly those from marginalized and lower-income communities.
I urge you, as my representative, to stand against any attempts to enforce a national ban on abortion. Instead, I implore you to advocate for policies that protect and expand access to abortion care, respecting the right to bodily autonomy and reproductive choice. The focus should be on creating a healthcare system that supports and empowers individuals, rather than one that restricts and penalizes them.
