An open letter to the U.S. House of Representatives
Oppose HR 1579: Protect Dignity and Rights in House Facilities
1 so far! Help us get to 5 signers!
I am writing to express my strong opposition to House Resolution 1579, which seeks to prohibit Members, officers, and employees of the House from using single-sex facilities that do not correspond to their biological sex. This bill, currently in the House Committee on House Administration, represents a significant step backward in our nation's progress towards equality and respect for all individuals.
HR 1579, introduced on November 18, 2024, is a partisan measure with only Republican sponsors. It fails to recognize the complex nature of gender identity and the importance of creating inclusive environments for all who work in and visit our nation's Capitol. By forcing individuals to use facilities that do not align with their gender identity, this bill would cause unnecessary distress and potentially dangerous situations for transgender and gender non-conforming individuals.
The bill's attempt to restrict bathroom access based on biological sex is not only discriminatory but also impractical to enforce. It would create a hostile work environment and potentially violate privacy rights. Moreover, there is no evidence that such restrictions improve safety or address any real problems in House facilities.
I urge you to oppose HR 1579 and instead support policies that promote dignity, respect, and equal rights for all individuals, regardless of their gender identity. Our government should be leading by example in creating inclusive spaces, not reinforcing outdated and harmful stereotypes.
The fact that this bill has only progressed 25% and has died in committee suggests that there is recognition of its problematic nature. Let's ensure it stays that way. I ask that you publicly speak out against HR 1579, work to prevent it from advancing further, and advocate for more inclusive policies that reflect the diverse nature of our society and the constituents you represent.
Your opposition to this bill would send a powerful message that discrimination has no place in our government institutions. It would affirm the rights of all individuals to work and participate in democratic processes without fear of harassment or exclusion. I look forward to hearing about your stance on this important issue and the actions you plan to take to protect the rights and dignity of all House members, officers, and employees.
