Stop JD Vance From Twisting Christianity to Justify Nationalism.

I am writing to express concern over Senator JD Vance’s misrepresentation of Ordo Amoris to justify Christian nationalist policies that undermine pluralism, equality, and care for the vulnerable. Vance and others have distorted this concept, originally articulated by Saint Augustine in De Civitate Dei, to promote an exclusionary agenda that contradicts Christian ethics and democratic values.
The Ordo Amoris ("order of love") prioritizes devotion in a divinely ordered manner, but Vance and other nationalists misuse it to justify preferential treatment of white, Christian conservatives while marginalizing others. This misinterpretation has rationalized exclusionary policies against immigrants, LGBTQ+ individuals, religious minorities, and those in need of social services.
Figures like R.R. Reno (Return of the Strong Gods, 2019) and Stephen Wolfe (The Case for Christian Nationalism, 2022) have similarly misapplied Ordo Amoris to support nationalist identity politics rather than universal compassion. These distortions embolden discrimination and justify policies that neglect the poor, elderly, and disabled.
Christian nationalist rhetoric has also been used to undermine social support systems. Leaders such as Doug Wilson and Andrew Torba argue against government aid, claiming charity should be reserved for the "worthy" under their selective moral frameworks. Such interpretations contradict Christ’s commands in Matthew 25:35-40 to care for "the least of these." Using Christian theology to justify systemic neglect erodes both religious teachings and principles of justice.
As my elected representative, I urge you to speak out against the misuse of Christian doctrine for exclusionary purposes. Religious freedom and moral integrity require that we challenge those who weaponize faith for discrimination rather than service and love. I ask that you publicly condemn the misuse of Ordo Amoris and similar concepts to justify marginalization and neglect.
Thank you for your time and commitment to justice and equality. I look forward to your response and any actions you take on this matter.
