An open letter to the U.S. Congress

Rep. Self must respect Rep. McBride's identity, apologize sincerely.

Representative Keith Self's refusal to refer to Congresswoman Sarah McBride by her proper name and pronouns demonstrates a lack of basic respect and decency unbecoming of someone in his position. His intentional misgendering of Rep. McBride, the first openly transgender member of Congress, is deeply offensive and discriminatory. By adjourning the hearing rather than correcting his unacceptable behavior, Rep. Self abdicated his responsibilities as chairman. This incident calls into serious question Rep. Self's capacity to conduct himself professionally and treat all members of Congress with equal dignity. His actions undermine the integrity of the House Foreign Affairs committee he is tasked with overseeing. Rep. Self owes Rep. McBride and the American people a sincere apology, and should reconsider whether he can properly fulfill his duties in a fair and impartial manner moving forward.
