I am writing to urge you to call for the removal of Labor Secretary Lori Chavez-DeRemer from her position. The ongoing investigation by the Labor Department's inspector general into serious allegations of misconduct has created an untenable situation that undermines the credibility and effectiveness of an agency responsible for protecting American workers.
The resignation of two top aides, Chief of Staff Jihun Han and Deputy Chief of Staff Rebecca Wright, following their placement on administrative leave in mid-January signals the severity of this situation. These officials are under investigation for alleged travel fraud, specifically for setting up professional events that Chavez-DeRemer reportedly used as cover for personal travel. Additionally, at least one member of her security detail has been on leave since January 16 amid allegations of an inappropriate relationship with the secretary.
The Labor Department oversees critical protections for millions of American workers, from wage and hour standards to workplace safety regulations. This agency cannot function effectively when its leadership is mired in scandal and its top staff are resigning under investigation. Workers across the country deserve a Labor Secretary who is focused entirely on their needs, not managing personal controversies and inspector general investigations.
While Chavez-DeRemer's attorney has denied the allegations, the fact remains that multiple senior staff members have been forced out and formal complaints have been filed. The inspector general, former Rep. Anthony D'Esposito, is conducting an independent investigation, but the damage to the department's reputation and operations is already substantial.
I urge you to publicly call for Chavez-DeRemer's resignation or removal. The American workforce cannot afford leadership distracted by scandal and investigation. The Labor Department needs a secretary who can command respect and focus solely on protecting workers' rights and safety.
