Oppose Renaming Department of Defense to Department of War

I oppose the plan to rename the Department of Defense as the Department of War. President Trump’s executive order favored by Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth unnecessary. The Department of Defense has carried its current name since 1947, reflecting the complex nature of modern national security that extends far beyond active warfare. This name change would be a regressive step, ignoring the evolving nature of global threats and the multifaceted role our military plays in maintaining peace and stability.
The financial implications of this change are staggering. Estimates suggest that altering official seals, uniforms, and documents could cost tens of millions of dollars or more. This is an irresponsible use of taxpayer money, especially when our nation faces more pressing security challenges.
Moreover, this proposal seems to be more about political theater than enhancing our national defense. Many presidents, including those with distinguished military service, have maintained the Department of Defense name, recognizing its appropriateness and historical significance.
Recent events have already strained the credibility of our defense leadership, with reports of security breaches and the ousting of respected military figures. This name change would further undermine the seriousness with which we approach national defense.
I urge you to oppose this misguided proposal and instead focus on substantive measures to strengthen our national security. Our military deserves leadership that values strategic thinking and diplomatic nuance over superficial changes that do nothing to enhance our defensive capabilities.
