An open letter to the U.S. Congress

Halt Federal Law Enforcement Overreach in American Cities

I am writing to express my deep concern over the recent statements made by Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem regarding the potential deployment of federal law enforcement to various cities across our nation, including those in Republican-led states. This proposed action represents a dangerous overreach of federal power that threatens the autonomy of our local communities and the principles of federalism upon which our country was founded. Secretary Noem has confirmed plans to increase resources for Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) operations in Illinois and other states. While she defends these actions as necessary for improving safety, I believe they pose a significant threat to our civil liberties and the constitutional rights of American citizens. The use of federal agents and the National Guard in cities like Los Angeles and Washington D.C. during recent unrest has already raised serious questions about the appropriate role of federal forces in local law enforcement matters. As your constituent, I urge you to take immediate action to prevent this federal overreach. Congress must exercise its oversight authority to investigate and, if necessary, limit the Department of Homeland Security's ability to deploy federal agents to American cities without explicit local consent. We need legislation that clearly defines the circumstances under which federal intervention is permissible and establishes robust safeguards against abuse. The controversy surrounding these actions is not partisan. Even Republican-led states are expressing concern about federal intervention in their jurisdictions. Illinois Governor JB Pritzker has rightly criticized this approach as disruptive and fundamentally un-American. Our nation's strength lies in its diversity and local governance, not in heavy-handed federal intervention. Time is of the essence. With preparations already underway in cities like Chicago for potential immigration raids and troop deployments, we must act swiftly to protect our communities. I implore you to speak out against these actions, introduce or support legislation to curb this overreach, and use your position to demand transparency from DHS regarding their plans and justifications. The American people deserve better than to live in fear of unwarranted federal intervention in their daily lives. Our democracy depends on maintaining the delicate balance between federal and local authority. Please stand up for our constitutional rights and the integrity of our local governance before it's too late.
