Preserve USPS independence, reject executive overreach

The U.S. Postal Service has operated as an independent federal agency since the Postal Reorganization Act of 1970, purposefully walling it off from political interference. Removing the governing board and placing the agency under executive control would violate this long-standing precedent and legal framework. It threatens to disrupt the operations of this vital service which facilitates trillions in e-commerce transactions and provides universal mail delivery to all Americans. The proposed executive order would overstep boundaries and infringe on Congressional authority overseeing the Postal Service. As an independent establishment of the executive branch, the USPS is designed to function with a degree of insulation from partisan politics and short-term interests. Absorbing it into a cabinet department jeopardizes this fundamental structure. This encroachment on the autonomy of the Postal Service sets an alarming precedent of expanding executive power over agencies intended to remain outside of direct political control.
