Trump on Friday said in a memorandum that lawyers aren’t supposed to file lawsuits or engage in court action unless there is “a basis in law” that is not “frivolous,” suggesting that he and AG Pam Bondi, not courts, would be in charge of determining what that is.
“Far too many attorneys and law firms have long ignored these requirements when litigating against the Federal Government or in pursuing baseless partisan attacks,” Trump said. “To address these concerns, I hereby direct the Attorney General to seek sanctions against attorneys and law firms who engage in frivolous, unreasonable, and vexatious litigation against the United States or in matters before executive departments and agencies of the United States.”
He’s coming for the law. And the law’s not fighting him. The law’s bending to his will.
This means that America as we know it is over. Trump can go after anyone he views as an opponent-past, present, or future-and they will not be able to find lawyers with enough regard for the profession they practice to defend them. They are ruled by corporate interests. By business with federal interests. By boards who are being cynical in their decisions.
They have succumbed, as everyone else is, and by doing so, have betrayed American democracy.
What kind of country do they think will remain standing when the Trump administration is done with retribution? Do they think lawyers will be necessary when the state becomes the only law?
No one is standing up for the country. And it was so easy to destroy us. All it took was our help.
