Remove Regulatory Barriers to COVID-19 Vaccination for Adults Under 65

I am writing to respectfully urge the State Department of Health to consider following the lead of New Mexico in removing the regulatory barriers currently limiting access to COVID-19 vaccines for individuals under the age of 65. On August 29, 2025, New Mexico Secretary of Health Gina DeBlassie issued a public health order that eases restrictions and expands vaccine eligibility beyond the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) guidelines that limit vaccination primarily to those 65 and older or with specific high-risk conditions. This important step by New Mexico prioritizes increased vaccine accessibility and reflects a proactive public health approach. It acknowledges the ongoing risk posed by COVID-19 to a broader population and supports equitable access to preventive care across all age groups. Currently, the CDC’s guidelines and some associated state policies restrict vaccine availability to primarily older adults and individuals with underlying health conditions. This restricts many adults under 65 who desire and may benefit from vaccination, especially as new COVID-19 variants continue to evolve. These limitations also complicate vaccine distribution at major pharmacy chains within certain states, leading to confusion and barriers for residents seeking vaccination. Aligning state vaccine policy with New Mexico’s example would demonstrate commitment to public health safety, community protection, and individual autonomy in healthcare decisions. Removing these barriers will encourage higher vaccination rates, reduce COVID-19 spread, and potentially lessen the burden on hospitals and healthcare providers.
