Global Vaccine Equity
To whom it may concern,
I am writing this letter to ask that you support and bring forth measures that will help address the COVID-19 vaccine inequity around the world. It is absolutely critical for global health and pandemic recovery.
Since a virus does not understand geographic borders, none of us will be truly safe from COVID-19 until the whole world is vaccinated. Variants can only arise when the virus is infecting human hosts and mutating. Vaccinating the world will help decrease infections, leading to fewer new variants that could negatively impact the trajectory of the pandemic
To help save the lives of people worldwide, as well as end the pandemic on our soil, we need to ensure global vaccine access The Delta variant of SARS- CoV-2, and now potentially the new Omicron variant, have demonstrated that the pandemic can, and will be, prolonged without stronger action to increase global vaccination rates above 70%. To protect your voters and to ensure that we end this pandemic you need to protect the world.That means encouraging, supporting, and advocating in the legislature for global vaccine equity.
Specific actions must be taken by world leaders to help enable vaccine equity.
These include:
Supporting the transfer of vaccine technology by encouraging companies to waive intellectual property protections to enable other countries to manufacture doses.
Maximize purchasing more vaccines to donate directly to COVAX. What we’ve already done is a start, but it is not enough.
Start initiatives to ramp up production and distribution to other countries, and assist with distribution plans.
The allocated funds in the Build Back Better Act to support global and domestic vaccine production are important for this effort. The NOVID Act, introduced by Congressman Krishnamoorthi (Illinois) and backed by members of the COVID-19 Global Vaccination Caucus, is another example of important funding that could aid in access. I ask that you show your support for this funding - and future endeavors of this caucus - for the long-term well-being of your voters.
