The recent deportations to CECOT prison in El Salvador were rife with inaccuracies and human rights violations.
To the point, an independent investigation has found that three-quarters of the Venezuelans deported by the Trump administration to CECOT don’t even have criminal records. The case of Abrego Garcia, who was labeled a gang member by a discredited informant, is shocking in its defiance of the courts and decades of immigration policy.
Our country has robbed these immigrants of their right to due process, to hear their cases in court and to challenge claims against them. This is *not* supposed to happen in a country that values the rule of law, yet here we are.
It is the responsibility of Congress, as a coequal branch of our federal government to provide oversight and hold the Trump Administration accountable, including advocating for the safe return of detainees to the US to have their day in court.
To repeat, every immigrant to the United States must be allowed due process.
