I’m writing to urge you to take immediate action to address the epidemic of gun violence in America. The recent mass shooting at Florida State University — one of 81 mass shootings already this year — is yet another horrifying reminder that no place in this country is safe from the threat of gunfire.
More than 40,000 Americans die from gun violence each year. That’s over 100 people every single day — in schools, supermarkets, places of worship, and on ordinary street corners. These deaths are not inevitable. They are the result of policy choices — and the refusal of Congress to enact even basic, commonsense gun safety laws like universal background checks, red flag laws, and restrictions on assault weapons.
Enough is enough. We shouldn’t have to live in fear that our children could be gunned down at school or that a trip to the grocery store could turn deadly. Americans overwhelmingly support stronger gun laws, but time and again, our leaders have failed to act — while families across the country are forced to bury their loved ones.
Please stand up to the gun lobby and stand with the vast majority of Americans who want change. Pass gun control laws that will save lives. We cannot afford another year of inaction.
