Texas: Properly Fund Public Schools, Reject Flawed Vouchers
I am writing to strongly oppose school vouchers, which would divert public funds from already struggling schools and fail to serve most Texans, particularly those in rural communities and lower-income families.
Texans have repeatedly voiced opposition to this policy, and for good reason—it does not provide real educational choice for most families and will only make our education system worse.
This is a pivotal moment for Texas. The decisions made today about public education will shape the state’s future—either for the better or for the worse. Investing in public schools strengthens our workforce, economy, and communities, while underfunding them leaves generations of Texans unprepared and struggling. Right now, Texas has a historic budget surplus, yet our schools remain underfunded, our teachers underpaid, and our students underperforming.
The reality is that most families cannot afford private school, even with a voucher. A 2022 Texas Education Agency report found that private school tuition ranges from $10,000–$25,000 per year, while proposed voucher amounts cover only a fraction of that cost.
Low-income and middle-class families will be left behind, while public schools lose even more funding. Rural areas, where there are few or no private schools, will be hit the hardest. Vouchers do nothing for these students except leave them in underfunded schools with fewer resources and fewer teachers.
It is embarrassing that a state as big and wealthy as Texas refuses to properly fund public education. This failure is happening under Republican leadership, and if it continues, Texas will suffer.
A well-funded education system benefits everyone, creating a stronger economy, lower crime rates, and a more skilled workforce. Without proper investment, the state will see higher poverty, a weaker economy, and a struggling workforce.
1. Fund Texas public schools.
2. Pay teachers what they deserve.
3. Reject vouchers.
Texas’ future depends on it.
