I would like to address and strongly oppose the executive order “Ending Radical Indoctrination in K-12 Schooling,” and urge you to do the same. I strongly disagree with the notion that teaching about systemic racism and supporting LGBTQ+ students constitutes "radical indoctrination." The evidence of systemic oppression and bias are indisputable. The valid existence of LGBTQ+ people is indisputable, and affirming acceptance of diversity improves mental health and reduces the risk of suicide in the LGBTQ+ community. Racism and homophobia, systemic racism and bias, and access to healthcare are important issues that deserve to be addressed truthfully and sensitively in educational settings. Prosecuting teachers for broaching these topics would be a severe overreach that violates principles of academic freedom and impedes students from gaining a well-rounded understanding of our society and fellow citizens.
I urge you to step up and oppose this policy of censorship and overpolicing of curriculum. Schools should be safe places where students may speak with trusted and competent adults who can help them address their concerns without fear. Schools should be spaces where students can learn, question, and develop critical thinking skills – not echo chambers that avoid difficult but vital discussions. An educated citizenry benefits us all.
