The World Trade Center Health Program provides critical medical care and support for 9/11 responders and survivors suffering from illnesses linked to toxic exposures at Ground Zero. With over 150,000 members nationwide relying on this federally mandated program, recent staffing cuts and administrative issues have brought certifications for new conditions and treatments to a halt. This unacceptable situation is leaving gravely ill patients unable to access potentially life-saving care like chemotherapy and transplants they are legally entitled to receive. As health officials have made clear, any delay in treatment could prove fatal for those battling terminal illnesses like pancreatic cancer after putting their lives on the line in the wake of the 9/11 attacks. The program was established through the Zadroga Act to fulfill our nation's moral obligation to support the heroes who served when their country needed them most. Underfunding this vital initiative would be an injustice and a breach of that promise. I urge you to take immediate action to fully reinstate the World Trade Center Health Program's leadership, restore staffing to proper levels, and provide robust funding to meet the escalating medical needs of the 9/11 community. These responders and survivors have already sacrificed so much - we cannot fail them again when their lives are on the line. The federal government must uphold its commitment and make the program whole without further delay.
