Today I’m writing about a matter of urgency concerning civil rights and the promise of the United States to help refugees.
You, the Supreme Court of the land must recognize and uphold the rulings of lower courts, to continue the United States’ commitment to all of these threatened groups and dismiss any attempts that the administration takes to reverse course with unjust, and un-legislated executive orders.
You have cases coming before you about this matter.
The Trump administration's termination of Temporary Protected Status (TPS) for Venezuelans residing lawfully in the United States threatens to uproot the lives of 600,000 people, and there are other groups whose status are also being threatened as part of the cruel and aggressive deportation measures undertaken by DHS.
TPS provides a provisional haven for foreign nationals whose home countries have been devastated by armed conflicts, environmental disasters, or other extraordinary conditions. Stripping this humanitarian protection from Venezuelans who have established deep roots in American communities would be an unconscionable act of cruelty.
Preserving TPS upholds our nation's commitment to human rights and prevents worsening the ongoing crisis in Venezuela through forced mass deportations.
The American ideals of compassion and refuge for the persecuted require extending, not terminating, the TPS designation for Venezuela. Thank you.
