An open letter to the U.S. Congress

Stop Interlopers from Dismantling the U.S. Copyright Office

7 so far! Help us get to 10 signers!

The U.S. Copyright Office is a vital government agency that protects the intellectual property of hard-working, tax-paying Americans. It helps to process applications that copyright hard work as well as having a searchable database of existing registrations. Last week, Trump fired the Librarian of Congress, Carla Hayden, who was the first woman and the first Black person to hold the position. Shira Perlmutter, who had held the job since 2020, was removed on Saturday, one day after the agency published a report that raised concerns about the legality of using copyrighted materials to train artificial intelligence. On May 12th, two (2) men tried to access the Copyright Office with a document in their possession that stated Deputy Attorney General, Todd Blanche, a personal defense attorney of Trump, was now the acting Librarian of Congress. Why Blanche? The Department of Justice announced that Blanche would replace Hayden, who had been in the position for almost ten years. The never-reliable press secretary Karoline Leavitt publicly stated that Hayden’s firing stemmed from “quite concerning things she had done at the Library of Congress in pursuit of DEI.” There has been no subsequent information, thus far, by Trump on why Perlmutter was fired. Some lawmakers have speculated that her removal was in connection to the report she released on copyright concerns and AI. “Donald Trump’s termination of the Register of Copyrights, Shira Perlmutter, is a brazen, unprecedented power grab with no legal basis,” Representative Joe Morelle, the top Democrat on the committee that oversees the Library of Congress, said in a statement on Saturday. “It is surely no coincidence he acted less than a day after she refused to rubber-stamp Elon Musk’s efforts to mine troves of copyrighted works to train AI models.” We must continue to share our VOICES LOUDLY, however we can, to preserve OUR government that is SUPPOSED TO protect Creators against bad actors. PLEASE HELP TO STOP THIS IMMEDIATELY.
