An open letter to the U.S. Congress

Investigate Google's Deletion of ICE Detention Public Records

41 so far! Help us get to 50 signers!

Google recently deleted the largest public paper trail documenting conditions inside ICE detention centers. This wasn't a routine data cleanup — it was the erasure of critical public interest records that advocates, journalists, and lawmakers rely on to hold the government accountable. I want you to launch a formal investigation into Google's decision to remove this information and push for legislation requiring tech platforms to preserve records of public significance. When a private corporation can quietly wipe out documentation of government detention practices, that's a threat to democratic oversight. Over 1,300 rape cases have been tied to ICE detention centers, with women and teenage girls becoming pregnant after sexual assault. The public deserves access to that record. Google's deletion makes it harder to pursue accountability and justice for people who have already been failed by the system. Subpoena the decision-makers at Google, find out who ordered this deletion and why, and work to recover what was lost. Platforms that host public interest data should not be permitted to destroy it without consequence.
