End the shortage of low income housing
“Housing is a vaccine for poverty, and home ownership is one of the fundamental ways for families to build generational wealth.”—Mayor Levar Stoney, Richmond, VA.
In the richest nation on the planet, the fact that we have more than half a million people who are unhoused on any given night is appalling. We are better than that. And, if we are not, then we damn well should be.
There are a plethora of reasons why someone becomes unhoused. But, when you have a job and still cannot put a roof over your own head or your family’s, there a primary reason for that—a lack of affordable housing.
Our city mayors are best placed to recognize and address the issue of affordable housing in our communities. But, they need the resources—financial and otherwise—to address the problem in a meaningful way. Also, while there are federal funds available, those funds should not have to funnel though state level governments who can then manipulate their budgets to the detriment of those who needs funds the most. If state legislatures are going to be in charge of and hold the purse strings, then it is incumbent upon you—my state government—to work with our mayor’s to see that every community, in every city, has affordable housing. To allow a single family to live their life on the streets is disgusting.
Please bring an end to the deficit of affordable housing. Give the funds that are needed to our mayors so that they can put a roof over the heads of every member of our community.
