Urgent Concern: Federal Executive Order Impact on State Law Enforcement

I am writing as your constituent to express my deep concern regarding the recent Executive Order issued by President Trump on April 28, 2025, titled “Strengthening and Unleashing America’s Law Enforcement to Pursue Criminals and Protect Innocent Citizens.” This Executive Order contains provisions that may significantly impact our state’s law enforcement policies and autonomy. Specifically, Section 3(b) calls for review and potential modification of consent decrees involving state law enforcement agencies, while Section 5 threatens federal prosecution of state officials who implement certain policies. These provisions risk undermining our state’s sovereignty and constitutional authority over law enforcement matters. The order also appears to challenge state-level diversity, equity and inclusion initiatives, characterizing them as potentially “unlawful” and subjecting state officials to federal prosecution (Section 5b). As my representative in the state legislature, I urge you to: 1. Review this Executive Order and assess its potential impact on [State]’s law enforcement agencies and policies. 2. Consider what legislative protections might be necessary to preserve our state’s constitutional authority. 3. Work with our state Attorney General to determine appropriate legal responses if federal overreach occurs. 4. Keep constituents informed about how the state plans to respond. Our federalist system depends on maintaining appropriate boundaries between federal and state authority. I am concerned this Executive Order may cross those boundaries and hope you will take an active role in protecting our state’s rights and citizens.
