An open letter to the U.S. Congress

The Senate Must Vote. Stop the Undeclared War

82 so far! Help us get to 100 signers!

I wrote to you recently regarding the House’s historic, bipartisan passage of the War Powers Resolution to end unauthorized military action. I understand that a presidential veto is likely, but that is irrelevant to your constitutional duty. Under Article I of the Constitution, the power to declare war belongs strictly to Congress. The executive branch cannot bypass the law simply because a fragile ceasefire or a shift in tactics is claimed. The 60-day legal window for unauthorized hostilities has passed, and Congress must assert its authority. The bottleneck is clear: Senate Majority Leader John Thune has not committed to a final floor vote on this resolution. I am asking you to go to the floor, break the gridlock, and pressure leadership to move this forward immediately. If lawmakers are waiting for a guarantee that the White House will approve of their actions, they misunderstand the separation of powers. This is a matter of the rule of law. It is time to hold an open vote, go on the record, and force the administration to justify this conflict to the American people. Will you defend the Constitution, or are you waiting for permission?
