Here's the letter body:
I am writing to express my concerns regarding recent statements made by President Donald Trump’s Defense Secretary, Pete Hegseth, on the topic of potential military conflict with China. In a recent interview, Hegseth made the assertion, “We’re prepared” in reference to the United States’ readiness to engage in war with China if the situation demands it. Given the gravity of such statements, I seek clarification on whether this stance truly represents our national strategy under the Trump administration and whether Congress has been fully informed about these potential plans.
While national security is a crucial priority, the prospect of entering into armed conflict with another global power like China raises serious concerns about the implications for American lives, global stability, and economic well-being. It is essential that our elected representatives have a clear understanding of the potential risks involved and the specifics of any preparedness claims made by those in leadership positions.
In addition, I am deeply concerned that such a stance could place the United States in a precarious position, especially considering the current state of our foreign relations. Throughout the Trump administration, the United States has alienated, insulted, or imposed tariffs on many of its key allies. If we were to enter into a conflict with China under these conditions, it seems we would be without the crucial support of those allies. This could put us in a severely disadvantaged position, both militarily and diplomatically.
As a concerned citizen, I would like to ask:
1. Has Congress been briefed on any official military strategies or preparedness plans regarding a potential conflict with China?
2. Does the statement by Pete Hegseth truly reflect the administration’s position, and if so, what is the official justification behind it?
3. What steps are being taken to avoid military escalation and to resolve issues diplomatically to prevent unnecessary loss of life and further global instability?
4. Given the strained relationships with our allies, how does the government plan to secure international support if conflict with China becomes a reality?
I trust that our representatives in Congress will ensure that any actions taken by the government are well-considered and in the best interest of the American people. I respectfully request your attention to this pressing matter and look forward to your response.
