I am writing as your constituent to urge you to protect Americans’ voting rights against threats to eliminate vote-by-mail and ballot drop boxes. These proposals would suppress participation, especially among seniors, people with disabilities, rural voters, and working families.
The evidence is clear:
• In the 2024 election, about 30% of voters cast ballots by mail—a level far higher than before the pandemic.
• Millions of ballots were returned through secure drop boxes across the country.
• Election Day in-person voting accounted for only 35-50% of ballots (depending on the state), while early voting—both by mail and in person—was the preferred method for most Americans.
The U.S. Election Assistance Commission and cybersecurity officials have repeatedly confirmed that vote-by-mail and drop boxes are secure, and the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency deemed the 2020 election “the most secure in American history.” Restricting these methods would only make it harder for eligible Americans to vote.
Instead of limiting access, Congress should be expanding it. I urge you to support legislation such as the Freedom to Vote Act and the John R. Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act, which would set fair national standards for ballot access and protect against racial discrimination in voting.
Democracy works only if every eligible voter can participate freely and securely. Please stand against any attempt to curtail mail voting or ballot drop boxes, and act to strengthen—not weaken—our democracy.
