I am writing to urge Congress to oppose harmful legislation that targets LGBTQ Americans, particularly transgender and nonbinary individuals. These laws intrude on personal freedoms, undermine families, and harm our nation by fostering discrimination and division.
Research shows that anti-LGBTQ legislation has severe mental health consequences. LGBTQ youth report significant negative impacts on their well-being due to political rhetoric, with many experiencing increased anxiety, depression, and emotional distress. Such policies disproportionately harm transgender youth, who are already a vulnerable population.
These laws also intrude on family decision-making. Gender-affirming care is medically necessary and evidence-based, yet many states have banned or restricted it for minors. This forces families to either uproot their lives or deny their children critical healthcare. Transgender and nonbinary youth are increasingly considering moving states due to restrictive laws.
Furthermore, these measures represent an overreach by government into private lives. Policies restricting discussions of gender identity in schools or banning access to gender-affirming care contradict medical consensus and violate personal freedoms. They interfere with individual autonomy and family medical choices.
Legislation targeting LGBTQ Americans is not only harmful but also counterproductive. Inclusive policies foster better mental health and community well-being. Congress must act to protect civil rights and reject measures that perpetuate harm and division.
