Veto the Unconstitutional Sex Offender Registry

I urge you to veto the Michigan Sex Offender Registration Act legislation recently passed by the legislature. As you are aware, almost identical laws have been ruled unconstitutional here in Michigan. The legislature passed this version with no hearings and without considering the ample evidence that these registries do not prevent sex crimes, but do make it much harder for former sex offenders to rejoin society in a productive manner. SORA sounds good -- who isn't in favor of keeping away from sex offenders? But in practice, it simply drives returning Michiganders underground and wastes taxpayer money that could be used actually helping people. The courts have already told Michigan this law can't be enforced. The science tells us it doesn't work. It is your job to veto it. Let's put that money to work supporting survivors.
