An open letter to the U.S. Congress

End For-Profit Immigration Detention and Restore Humanity to Our Policies

I’m writing as a concerned and heartbroken constituent who has watched with growing alarm the escalating actions of Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). The recent reports of individuals—including legal visa holders, green card holders, and even U.S. citizens—being detained without cause or transparency are both horrifying and unacceptable. Masked agents detaining people off the streets without clear identification or accountability is not only dystopian—it is deeply un-American. These are not just bureaucratic missteps; they are violations of human dignity, civil rights, and the values we claim to hold dear. What’s even more disturbing is that many of these detentions are happening in for-profit facilities, where corporations financially benefit from prolonged human suffering. People with no criminal records—some fleeing war, persecution, and unimaginable trauma—are being locked up in places that prioritize profit over compassion, safety, and justice. This is not only inhumane; it is morally reprehensible. As your constituent, I know you are working hard to uphold justice and human rights. I believe you share my outrage. That’s why I urge you to take swift, decisive action: • Shut down for-profit immigration detention centers. • Push for oversight and accountability in ICE operations. • Champion comprehensive immigration reform grounded in human rights and dignity. We are at a moral crossroads. The longer we allow these practices to continue, the more we risk becoming a nation unrecognizable from the one we aspire to be. We cannot allow private companies to profit from the suffering of vulnerable people. We cannot allow government agencies to operate without accountability. Please, continue to lead. Be bold. Let your colleagues know that your constituents are behind you—not just watching, but demanding that we do better. Thank you for your service and your moral courage. I trust that you will do everything in your power to ensure this country lives up to its highest ideals.
