An open letter to the U.S. Congress

Oppose NSPM-7: Protect First Amendment Rights and Nonprofit Independence

I am writing to express my deep concern over President Trump's National Security Presidential Memorandum 7 (NSPM-7), titled "Countering Domestic Terrorism and Organized Political Violence." This directive represents a dangerous overreach of executive power that threatens the very foundations of our democracy. NSPM-7 grants unprecedented authority to investigate and potentially punish organizations suspected of promoting political violence. However, its broad language and vague criteria create a real risk of misuse against legitimate political opposition and peaceful advocacy groups. The fact that over 3,000 nonprofit organizations have signed an open letter criticizing this directive underscores the gravity of this threat to civil society. The directive's empowerment of the National Joint Terrorism Task Force to investigate "potential federal crimes related to political violence" is particularly alarming. This broad mandate could easily be weaponized to intimidate and silence critics of the administration. Even more concerning is the provision allowing for investigation of funders and employees of organizations deemed responsible for criminal conduct, which could have a chilling effect on nonprofit operations and individual participation in civic life. As your constituent, I urge you to take immediate action to oppose NSPM-7. This directive is not only un-American and unconstitutional, as the nonprofits' letter states, but it also sets a dangerous precedent for future administrations. No president should have the power to unilaterally investigate and punish organizations they disagree with politically. The White House's defense of this action as necessary to address left-wing violence is a thinly veiled attempt to justify what is clearly a partisan attack on the administration's political opponents. This use of government resources to bully and intimidate critics is antithetical to our democratic values and must be denounced in the strongest terms. I call on you to speak out against NSPM-7, introduce or support legislation to nullify its effects, and work with your colleagues to protect the First Amendment rights of all Americans. Our democracy depends on the ability of citizens and organizations to engage in political discourse without fear of government reprisal. Please act now to defend this fundamental principle.
