An open letter to the U.S. Supreme Court

Oppose Deployment of Troops in Chicago

1 so far! Help us get to 5 signers!

I am writing to express my deep concern and strong opposition to the recent emergency appeal by Donald Trump to deploy troops in Chicago. This request, ostensibly to address protests against Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), is a dangerous overreach of federal power and a threat to our democratic principles. The claim that ICE protesters are "out of control" and violent is not supported by evidence. In fact, reports suggest that it is ICE agents who have been accused of using excessive force. Deploying military troops against American citizens exercising their First Amendment rights is an extreme and unwarranted response that could escalate tensions and lead to unnecessary violence. The use of military force in domestic law enforcement situations sets a alarming precedent. It blurs the line between military and civilian law enforcement, potentially violating the Posse Comitatus Act, which limits the powers of the federal government to use military personnel to enforce domestic policies. Furthermore, this request appears to be an attempt to bypass local and state authorities, undermining the principles of federalism that are fundamental to our system of government. Local officials are best positioned to address community issues and should be respected in their jurisdiction. I urge you to take a strong stand against this dangerous proposal. Please use your position to oppose any attempts to deploy troops in Chicago or any other American city for the purpose of quelling protests. Instead, advocate for addressing the root causes of civil unrest through dialogue, policy reform, and community engagement. The integrity of our democratic institutions and the safety of our citizens are at stake. We must not allow fear-mongering or political maneuvering to justify the use of military force against American civilians. I ask that you speak out publicly against this proposal and work with your colleagues to ensure that our constitutional rights and civil liberties are protected.
