An open letter to the U.S. Congress

No weakening environmental rules via "permitting reform!"

214 so far! Help us get to 250 signers!

I am very concerned about the package of energy and infrastructure bills currently being considered in the House of Representatives that weaken crucial environmental laws that protect clean air, clean water, and endangered species. Laws such as the National Environmental Policy Act, the Clean Water Act, and the Endangered Species Act are some of the only protections we have against water pollution, air pollution, and habitat destruction. Weakening these protections will allow irresponsible companies to harm people’s health and safety across the country, especially in the most vulnerable communities that lack the resources to fight dangerous projects. Please oppose: • H.R. 1152, the “Water Quality Certification and Energy Project Improvement Act,” which would amend the Clean Water Act and threaten people’s access to clean water. • H.R. 1115/H.R. 829, the “Promoting Interagency Coordination for Review of Natural Gas Pipelines Act,” which fast-tracks methane gas pipelines and weakens the National Environmental Policy Act. • The Building United States Infrastructure through Limited Delays and Efficient Reviews (BUILDER) Act, which weakens the National Environmental Policy Act. • The TAP American Energy Act, which weakens the Endangered Species Act and Clean Water Act and limits state and tribal input on federally-permitted projects. • H.R. 1070, which prevents the public from providing input on hazardous waste facilities by allowing certain energy facilities to receive an “interim permit” to treat, store and dispose of hazardous waste without an EPA permit. • H.R. 209, the Permitting Needs for Mining Act, which weakens the National Environmental Policy Act as it relates to mining on public lands, accelerates “exploratory mining,” and limits the opportunity for public input on these mining projects. Thank you for doing your part to protect community health and the environment.
