An open letter to the U.S. Congress

Release the billions of allocated federal education funds

The Department of Education's unjustified withholding of nearly $7 billion in congressionally approved K-12 education funding is an unacceptable dereliction of duty that threatens critical programs across the country. This impoundment jeopardizes after-school and summer programming for underprivileged children, support for migrant students, professional development for educators, resources for English language learners, and investments in classroom technology and facilities. These funds, which constitute 10% or more of total federal K-12 funding for states and territories, were lawfully appropriated by Congress and are desperately needed by schools and families. I urge you to take immediate action to secure the release of these impounded dollars, which are vital for ensuring all American children have access to a quality public education. The Education Department's contempt for the legislative branch and the needs of our nation's students cannot be tolerated.
