Provide Immediate Funding for Digital Equity Programs and Coalitions

I am writing to you not just as a resident of New York State but as a concerned citizen deeply invested in the future of our communities. My advocacy today focuses on the crucial work of the New York State Digital Equity Network (NYSDEN), a network of digital inclusion providers and regional digital equity coalitions tirelessly working to bridge the digital divide that separates too many New Yorkers from the opportunities the digital age offers. In our rapidly evolving digital world, the absence of adequate digital access, literacy, and resources stands as a formidable barrier against achieving educational success, accessing essential healthcare services, securing employment, and participating fully in civic life. The pandemic has underscored this divide, revealing how critical digital inclusion is for ensuring the resilience and well-being of our communities. NYSDEN members’ initiatives are at the forefront of addressing these challenges, offering targeted programs that provide underserved populations with the tools and training necessary to navigate and thrive in a digital society. From equipping students for remote learning to enabling the elderly to access telehealth services, their work is a beacon of hope and a catalyst for change. However, the scope of their impact is severely constrained by limited resources. It is in this context that I urge your support for the immediate release of $25 million in federal funds already earmarked for digital inclusion. This funding is pivotal for expanding NYSDEN members’ reach and efficacy. Additionally, I advocate for an allocation of $5 million in the state's 2024-2025 budget specifically to support and sustain digital inclusion programs. A policy commitment ensuring that at least 25% of all broadband expansion funds are dedicated to these initiatives would further cement New York's leadership in promoting digital equity. Supporting NYSDEN and its members is not merely an investment in technology; it is an investment in the people of New York, in our collective future, and in the principles of equity and access that define us as a society. By prioritizing digital inclusion, we can unlock the full potential of our communities, foster innovation, and build a more inclusive, connected New York for everyone. I appreciate your attention to this matter and your commitment to making New York a state where every citizen can thrive in the digital age. Thank you for considering my appeal on behalf of NYSDEN and for taking action to address this critical issue.
