Don’t Trade Privacy for Entertainment

I’m a Pennsylvania resident writing to urge stronger consumer data privacy and contract protections. I recently learned about the terms required to enter certain in-person entertainment venues, such as Netflix House. These agreements reportedly require broad consent to video and audio recording, use of a visitor’s likeness for unspecified purposes, monitoring of Wi-Fi usage, and mandatory arbitration clauses that limit a consumer’s ability to seek legal recourse — even in cases involving health or safety concerns like food poisoning. While reasonable security and operations policies make sense, contracts of this scope go far beyond what most people would expect or meaningfully consent to when entering a physical space open to the public. Pennsylvanians should not have to surrender privacy rights or legal protections just to participate in cultural or entertainment experiences. I urge you to support legislation that limits biometric and likeness data collection without narrow, informed consent; restricts blanket liability waivers for health and safety issues; and requires clearer, plain-language disclosures for arbitration and data use. Other states have taken steps to protect residents in these areas, and Pennsylvania should not fall behind. Thank you for your attention to this issue.
