Ready for the big parade Saturday? The president sure is. His message of pride in and the greatness of the American military shone brightly from his Oval Office taunt: “If there’s any protester wants to come out, they will be met with very big force…. For those people that want to protest, they’re going to be met with very big force.”
In front of military personnel at Ft. Bragg, carefully chosen “to be fit and not look fat,” Trump claimed the US was under a “foreign invasion” because of “stupid people or radical Left people or sick people.” He goaded them into booing Gov. Newsom and Mayor Bass.
He’s attempting to turn the world’s powerful military away from its focus on Russia and China toward a new enemy—the American people.
Is it because he broke up with Elon in such a publicly humiliating fashion? Is it because Ukraine will not give in to Putin, as he himself has chosen to do? Is it because Putin won’t just STOP and instead is batting him around like a a badminton birdie?
P.S. Right-wing bots, trolls, conspiracy theorists, and MAGA influencers are flooding social media with messages designed to attack immigrants and Democrats and defend Trump. Many of those accounts are linked to Russia and Russian disinformation.
A YouGov poll shows that only 34% of American adults approve of Trump’s deployment of Marines to LA. 47% do not.
38% of American adults approve of Trump’s deployment of National Guard soldiers to LA. 45% do not.
A strong majority, 56%, think state and local officials should take the lead in responding to the LA protests. Only 25% think the federal government should.
And 50% of adults disapprove of the administration's handling of deportations. Only 39% approve.
So maybe don’t use a mandate from the American people as an excuse to use violence against us?
Oh, and Pentagon estimates the cost of federalizing the National Guard and deploying the Marines to Los Angeles at $134 million. Quite a cost for vanity don’t you think?
Gov. Newsom is right to condemn these actions. You should condemn these actions.
He is correct that authoritarian regimes begin by targeting people who are least able to defend themselves. And that it never stops there.
He is correct that this isn’t just about protests in LA. When Trump sought blanket authority to commandeer the National Guard, he made that order apply to every state in this nation.
He is correct that democracy is under assault right before our eyes.
He is correct that Trump is taking a wrecking ball to the American experiment, and to the THREE coequal branches of independent government.
And he is absolutely correct that what Donald Trump wants most is your fealty, your silence, to be complicit in this moment.
“Do not give in to him.”
