I am writing to express my outrage about ICE's plan to convert industrial warehouses into detention facilities across the country. The Trump administration has purchased or proposed over twenty sites nationwide, with plans to detain as many as 9,500 people. Many of these warehouses are located near schools, hospitals, and places of worship, yet local officials were not notified or consulted before these sites were acquired.
This expansion raises serious concerns about both facility operations and infrastructure impacts on surrounding communities. Existing ICE facilities have documented histories of abuse, neglect, and unaccounted disappearances. Families, lawyers, and political officials have been denied access and oversight into these facilities, creating an environment where inhumane treatment can occur without accountability or transparency.
The lack of oversight is particularly alarming. When those who should be monitoring conditions are systematically excluded, vulnerable people suffer without recourse. Our neighbors deserve humane treatment and due process, not detention in facilities that operate beyond public scrutiny.
ICE's facility expansion has faced bipartisan opposition for good reason. Protests and pressure campaigns have already caused many companies and landowners to cancel their deals with the Department of Homeland Security. This demonstrates that organized resistance works, but several sales remain pending.
I demand that you speak out publicly against ICE's detention camp expansion. I urge you to support regulations that prevent ICE from purchasing and building these facilities in our state. Our communities should not be complicit in a system that denies basic human dignity and operates without transparency or accountability.
