It is crucial that we ratify the Equal Rights Amendment as the 28th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution without delay. Despite first being introduced nearly a century ago, the ERA remains unratified, perpetuating inequality under the law based solely on one's sex. This proposed amendment simply states that "equality of rights under the law shall not be denied or abridged by the United States or by any State on account of sex." It would invalidate discriminatory laws and ensure true equal protection for all citizens regardless of gender. The principle underlying the ERA is fundamental - one's legal rights should not be determined by sex. Its ratification is long overdue and would finally enshrine gender equality into the highest law of the land. With Virginia recently becoming the 38th state to ratify, the requisite number of states have approved the amendment. If Congress rescinds the previous 1982 deadline, there is now a clear path for the ERA to be adopted as the 28th Amendment. We must urgently push for Dr. Colleen Shogan, per the Washington Examiner article, to help ensure the ERA's ratification does not face further obstruction. Gender discrimination has no place in a society that values liberty and justice for all. Ratifying the Equal Rights Amendment would be a monumental step towards fulfilling the promise of equality at the heart of American democracy. For the sake of current and future generations, we must act now to make the ERA part of the U.S. Constitution.
