An open letter to the U.S. Congress

Urge Congressional Action to Prevent Greenland Crisis

8 so far! Help us get to 10 signers!

President Trump's recent letter to Norwegian Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre demanding control of Greenland represents a dangerous departure from rational foreign policy that threatens American security and prosperity. In this letter, forwarded by the White House National Security Council to ambassadors, Trump claimed that because Norway did not award him the Nobel Peace Prize for "having stopped 8 Wars PLUS," he no longer feels obligated to think purely of peace. He questioned Denmark's ownership of Greenland and declared "The World is not secure unless we have Complete and Total Control of Greenland." This rhetoric has real consequences. Financial markets are already anticipating a damaging trade war. Greenland has been Danish territory for centuries, with residents who are Danish citizens voting in Danish elections. Multiple written documents establish Danish sovereignty, including some signed by the United States. Any military action would mean American forces occupying the territory of a NATO treaty ally, potentially killing Danes and losing American soldiers in the process. The stakes extend far beyond Greenland. Trump risks alienating critical allies in Europe, India, South Korea, Japan, and Australia. Years of careful diplomacy and billions of dollars in trade hang in the balance. His obsessive fixation on the Nobel Peace Prize, which is awarded by the Norwegian Nobel Committee rather than any government, has become the justification for potentially catastrophic military and diplomatic action. Congress has the constitutional authority to prevent this crisis. I urge you to use every tool available to block any military or coercive action against Greenland and Denmark. This includes withholding funding, passing resolutions, and publicly opposing this reckless course. The American people deserve leadership that prioritizes our genuine security interests and economic well-being over personal grievances. Now is the time to act before permanent damage is done to American interests and alliances.
