Today I take pen in hand to write and express my strong opposition to the nomination of Rebecca Taibleson to the U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals for the Seventh Circuit. I urge you to oppose and Vote NO on her nomination before the Senate.
Taibleson's long-standing involvement with the Federalist Society since 2007 almost certainly ensures a commitment to a specific judicial ideology that will not align with the diverse needs and values of the Circuit Court. Knoing who the Federalist Society’s beliefs and dubious loyalty to the Constitution — basically a fringe fraternity of anti-democratic values — ought to be enough to discredit her.
This affiliation, coupled with her clerkships for conservative justices like Antonin Scalia and Brett Kavanaugh, indicates a potential bias that could impact her judicial decision-making.
Worse, her work has almost always aligned with far right conservative legal positions. For instance, her testimony in support of Brett Kavanaugh during his controversial confirmation hearing demonstrates a willingness to back divisive judicial nominees. This isn’t backing the law, it’s backing a person or ideology.
In addition I question her motives owing to numerous legal cases.
1. She’s consistently sought to limit victim’s rights to justice in corporate cases
2. She has fluid beliefs in what constitutes freedom of speech
3. She’s a vocal and written proponent of the Originalist doctrine
These are just a few examples.
The Seventh Circuit Court of Appeals requires judges who can approach cases with an open mind and a commitment to equal justice under the law. With this Administration in power, Taibleson's background suggests she will fail to set aside her ideological leanings when interpreting the law.
Please vote against confirming Rebecca Taibleson to the Seventh Circuit Court of Appeals. Thank you.
