In recognition of World Suicide Prevention Day on September 10, I am writing to you regarding the Trump administration’s decision to eliminate the LGBTQ+ “Press 3” option from the national suicide prevention hotline. In under three years, nearly 1.6 million LGBTQ+ individuals relied on this vital lifeline.
Each year, nearly 40% of LGBTQ+ youth—and about half of transgender and nonbinary youth—seriously consider suicide. The “Press 3” option provided affirming, culturally competent care from trained counselors who understood the unique challenges LGBTQ+ individuals face. Without it, callers are left to navigate generalized systems that often fall short in meeting their needs.
You have the power—and the responsibility—to act. I urge you to:
• Establish a state-funded LGBTQ+ crisis line available 24/7 via phone, text, and chat.
• Partner with trusted community organizations to design and staff the service with trained professionals.
• Work with the state legislature to pass protections ensuring the hotline cannot be dismantled or compromised.
• Train all crisis counselors to provide affirming, inclusive support to LGBTQ+ individuals.
Please act swiftly to ensure LGBTQ+ residents in our state have access to safe, affirming mental health support when they need it most.
