I am writing with urgency and deep concern about Donald Trump’s attacks on ABC and the Australian Broadcasting Corporation. The freedom of the press—domestic and international—is not a luxury. It is the backbone of every healthy democracy. Attempts to discredit, intimidate, or silence journalists are not just reckless, they are dangerous to the very foundation of our Republic.
The American people have the right to know the truth. When leaders target the press, they do so to hide something. Only guilty people fear accountability. Only dictators demand control of information. Which is it? Are we to accept authoritarian tactics in the United States of America?
The First Amendment is clear. The press must be free from political retaliation and government interference. When attacks are directed at news organizations—whether in our country or abroad—they are attacks on democracy itself. We cannot and must not tolerate this.
I demand that Congress speak out immediately, defend our press freedoms without hesitation, and hold accountable anyone who seeks to undermine this most basic American right. Silence is complicity. Action is duty.
The people are watching. The world is watching. Which side of history will you be on?
