An open letter to the U.S. Congress

Preserve impartial governance, reject partisan presidential honors

These legislative proposals to honor the sitting president through acts like renaming airports, putting his face on currency, or making his birthday a federal holiday are highly inappropriate and unprecedented. Current presidents should not be receiving this level of aggrandizement from Congress before their term has ended and their legacy can be properly evaluated. Bestowing these types of commemorations is typically reserved for presidents long after they have left office, when there has been sufficient time and perspective to assess their full impact and historical significance. This rush to flatter the president undermines the legislative process and diminishes the dignity and impartiality expected of our governing institutions. Congress should be focused on substantive policymaking for the good of the nation rather than engaging in overt political favors.
